Our belief system

Values: things that you consider to be important to you.
Beliefs: things you put your trust in or consider to be true to you.
Standards: the bar you set for yourself – and others - when it comes to putting one’s values and beliefs into practice.

Working out which beliefs, values and standards you hold dear can be a useful tool in discovering what is important to you, and in turn what makes you you.

For example, can you complete the following sentences:
I value…
I believe that…
I believe that I am…
My standards mean that I will/won’t…

Sometimes, however, our values, beliefs and standards can work against our wellbeing. Sometimes having different values to other people can get us into trouble. Sometimes we are expected to believe what other people believe, even though we don’t. For some people, not being able to live by their own standards or the standards that others have set for them can be the start of an internal conflict, the start of distress.

Would it be a useful exercise to audit your belief system (once in a while) and decide which of them are working for you and which are working against you?
