Dreams & dreaming

What (if any) is the purpose of dreaming? How come we do not dream for all of our sleeping time? What’s going on when we’re not dreaming? How come we remember some dreams and not others?

Sigmund Freud said that the content of our dreams are the desires of the unconscious side of us, a side that’s often repressed in our waking hours. Carl Jung saw dreams as a means of the unconscious communicating with the conscious. Others think dreaming is more about us simply processing our daytime thoughts and ultimately trying to make sense of them; that they aid our memories; they help us to solve problems; that they’re merely a by-product of thinking. Arnie Mindel saw a connection between what our dreams were doing (and saying) and what our bodies were experiencing. He called this ‘dreambody.’ What do you think? How important are dreams and dreaming in your life? How important is it to understand what dreams might be telling us?
