Conscious walking

We’ve looked at the benefits of conscious breathing in a February entry. Let’s now turn our attention to our step, by introducing a new method of walking. There are no doubt many ways to walk actively and consciously, but this one just happens to improve our posture, too.

Unlike a typical, unconscious step, which starts with one leg moving forward and the second leg following suit, this approach makes us aware of the leg that’s about to be propelled forwards but is presently slightly behind our body. By focusing on the back-step thrust of each of our legs – which takes quite a lot of concentration – we can become pretty mind/body-fixated. Great if we have a lot of unwanted thoughts, or if we are feeling a bit weird/dissociative.

Once you get the hang of doing this, these movements can become more pronounced and we can start to feel some new muscles doing some work-outs, too.
