Secular hymns
Professor Steve Thomsen defined ‘secular hymns’ as having six themes:
• It becomes timeless
• It’s about redemption or deliverance
• It has spiritual overtones
• It includes metaphors relating to life's ups and downs
• Its meaning has becoming greater than its original purpose
• It’s frequently used as a soundtrack to major life happenings
Examples may include…
Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Let It Be, Hallelujah, Blowing in the Wind, Many Rivers to Cross, Imagine, We Shall Overcome.
