Permissions vs injunctions
Parents, carers and other adults can have a big impact on the life of our younger self by determining whether or not we can move forward in certain areas (with permissions) or whether we’re blocked, hampered or restrained from other areas (injunctions). Below are examples of each:
Permissions
Do grow up
Do think
Do be yourself
Do feel
Do be close (to me)
Do enjoy life
Do belong
Do succeed
Do be sane
Do things
Do be well
Injunctions
Don’t grow up
Don’t think
Don’t be yourself
Don’t feel
Don’t be close (to me)
Don’t enjoy life
Don’t belong
Don’t succeed
Don’t be sane
Don’t do anything
Don’t be well
Can you come up with your own list that’s appropriate to your own experiences of growing up?
If you didn’t grow up with permission to do certain things, maybe you can start to give yourself the permission and the responsibility to do so.
