Doodling

Do you have pens and paper at the ready? Then let’s begin...

Pick a colour and put it somewhere on your paper.
Draw a shape, any shape. Colour in your shape.
Draw 8 different types of lines: they could be short or long, thick or thin, straight, curvy or wavy. Don’t think, just draw.
Have a doodle using the ‘hatching’ technique of drawing with lots of short lines.
Try doing something now with some cross-hatching.
Is now the right time for lots and lots of wavy lines?
Could there be something satisfying about doing some weaving?
Would making some doodle knots be interesting? Simple ones or more complex ones? You choose.
How about some braiding?
What do you think of contorts, like the contorts that depict a mountain? Is there anything you would like to portray using this approach?
Where might blobs and splatters take you? You’ll never know until you try it.
Can you divide your page up with lots of horizontal and vertical lines until you have lots and lots of boxes? What would you like to put inside these boxes? Colours? Shapes? Letters? Images?
Alternatively, you may wish to make criss-crossed boxes by drawing the lines diagonally.
Can you now spend some time creating a pattern (without too much thought)? It can be as basic or as complicated as you like.

And relax… and reflect.
