Exercises that bypass the brain

Do you have 10 minutes to spare, pens and pencils at the ready, and 15 sheets of paper? If so, we now invite you to undertake one creative task per page, allowing around 10 seconds for each task, with 5 seconds in between to view and reflect on your creation, before moving onto the next activity.

(NB. Because these are quick, do not worry about neatness or quality or anything making sense/ This is just about getting ideas down on paper, nothing more, nothing less.)

Ready?

1. Draw something small. Then on the same page draw something big.
2. Turn your page to landscape and write your name in a way you have never done before. Repeat over and over if you find this interesting and useful.
3. Draw 5 things that would make a perfect day for you.
4. Draw a flag that represents who you are, one that captures the essence of you.
5. Draw as many love hearts on the page as you want.
6. What is waiting for you in lost property?
7. Draw a hiccup.
8. Draw an abstract shape. Once you have drawn it, you might then want to see if you can turn your abstract shape into something non-abstract.
9. Draw/write 3 things you would like to get rid of.
10. Draw/write 3 things you would like to keep forever.
11. Draw an elephant using your non-dominant hand.
12. Imagine you have finally managed to go somewhere that’s important to you. What is the destination on your ticket?
13. Quickly draw 10 triangles on your paper. Do not think about them; just put them down on your page.
14. Close your eyes and let your hand guide you around a doodle. Open your eyes and see what you’ve created. What did it feel like to do this exercise?
15. Take a breath. Hold the breath and then let your pen move with the breath wherever it needs to go.

And breathe. And reflect on the exercise as a whole. Did you manage to bypass your brain and get to an interesting place beyond logic and reason?
