Dressing up

In the 1970s, a BBC children’s programme called Mr Benn revolved around a man visiting a costume shop. When he put on a certain outfit he would step out of the changing cubicle into a magical adventure. Over his career, the musician David Bowie would often transform himself from one character to another, from Ziggy Stardust to Aladdin Sane to the thin white Duke, etc.

Without the clothes, the hairstyles, the make-up, there would have been no adventure, no change, no progression. So what might stop us from experimenting with our appearance and having different experiences to the ones we have when we are merely looking like our normal selves? What we create by dressing up might have the power to propel us into areas of ourselves that we never knew existed – until we let them loose!

“Dressing up is like therapy: I feel better in myself when I’ve made an effort.”
