Symbols

Symbols: signs and marks that represent and communicate something; a visual design that has an intended meaning.

Can we delve into the world of symbols to help us express ourselves within a greater length and breadth? Below are a few examples to get our teeth into…

Logograms can be letters. symbols or signs that represent a whole word or a meaning.
Pictograms are pictures that are understood to have a shared meaning.
Inscriptions are something that’s been inscribed in stone or wood.
Petroglyphs are pre-historic art forms created on rocks by carving, scratching, engraving, chiselling. Could you develop your own way of expressing yourself through researching and using existing petroglyphs, or could you design your own?
Hieroglyphs stem from Egypt and use pictures and symbols as a means of expression and communication.
A rebus gives us the opportunity to combine any number of images, words and symbols, etc., in order to create something that has meaning and purpose in its own right. It could be a sentence or a message, or it could be a sense of something. It could be used as a puzzle for someone to solve, or it could be a secret code that allows us to express our thoughts and feelings in secret, in a way only we would understand.
Metaphors & similes are figures of speech that refer to something through another thing. For example: “I wander lonely as a cloud” or “Time is money”. In art, a visual metaphor uses an image as a symbol for something else.

Could you explore where any of these approaches might take you?
