Homeostasis
Homeostasis is defined as a body’s self-regulating process, where the stability of the organism as a whole can be maintained by adjusting and adapting to an ever-changing environment. Much of this work goes on automatically thanks to our reptilian and mammal brain, but what about our intellectual human brain? How much of what we do with this side of us can help or hinder the well-being of the body? For example, does your conscious mind trust your body to regulate itself, or does it fret and worry that something is wrong – and ultimately meddle unnecessarily in its affairs? Does it intervene as and when required? Does your conscious brain weigh up the needs of your physiology as much as your psychology?
NB. Adaptogens are substances that help the body become resilient to stresses and assist with the process of homeostasis. These tend to be herbs or roots (e.g., ginseng) or other plant forms such as mushrooms. Could aiding your body in this way help to pacify an anxious mind?
