Study of the Self
Study of the Self is a form of learning that encourages individuals to unearth what it means for them to be human in their own right; to understand who they are and who they could be; to explore how they interact with themselves and others and the world around them; to understand and act upon what makes them well and what makes them unwell. It’s a chance for people to study themselves, by themselves and for the benefit of themselves.
Study of the Self resources are interactive and come in easy-to-understand, bite-sized nuggets. Information is aggregated and adapted from sciences, humanities and the arts. As with other fields of study, there are concepts, exercises, activities, case studies, questions, quotations and illustrations. Unlike other disciplines, pre-learning (learning how to learn) and unlearning sit alongside the learning.
Materials can be used solo, one-to-one, in groups; at home, online, within the workplace, in education and in mental health settings; before, during and after therapy, or as an alternative to therapy.
Themes for learners to explore include ‘the self’, ‘self-worth’, ‘self-identity’, ‘relationships’, ‘coping strategies’, ‘thinking, feeling and actions’, ‘empowerment’, ‘spirituality’, ‘grief and loss’ and ‘the process of change’.
Psychoanalyst Carl Jung once said, “Who looks inside awakes”, yet he was also aware that “people will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls.”
Would you be prepared to do some work on yourself?
