The Self
Part 1 - Different types of self

Below is an A–Z list of some of the ways in which we can divide ourselves up into smaller areas to work on. Many of these selves will undoubtedly overlap, while others can be in conflict with another.

a. our physical self

Everything from skin and bones, to lymph glands and the nervous system.

b. our sensual self

Everything from detecting smell, touch, taste, sight and sound, to speed, motion and temperature.

c. our sexual self

Everything from our genitals to our skin, from attraction to arousal, pleasure and more besides.

d. our emotional self

Everything connected to our emotions, including bodily sensations.

e. our psychological self

Everything that is concerned with our mind.

f. our action self

Our behaviour and everything that we do.

g. our identity

Everything concerned with who, what and how we choose to represent ourselves – which in turn shapes our personality.

h. our personality

Everything that makes up our character and features – which in turn shapes our identity.

i. our moral self

Everything connected to notions of right and wrong.

j. our sub-personalities

All the different sides to our personality, which are unique in their own right.

k. our ‘self’ that relates with other people

Everything inside us that connects with the selves of others.

l. our ‘self’ that relates with our environment

Everything inside us that connects with the world.

m. our ‘self’ that relates to our own ‘self’ (or selves)

The parts of us that connect with other parts of ourselves.

n. our spiritual self

Everything connected with the spirit of the self – rather than the physical and material aspects.

o. our true self

Everything that we think and feel and do that is genuine, authentic and grounded in reality.

p. our false self

Everything that we think, feel and do that is not grounded in reality, be it an imitation of something else, an illusion, or something incongruent to our true selves.

q. our altered self

Everything about us that has undergone a change from our usual conscious state: either through taking mind-altering substances such as alcohol and drugs, through exposure to toxins, or a psychological reaction to trauma such as schizophrenia, flashbacks, etc.
